Application Process for the Working Holiday Visa in Switzerland

1. Eligibility and Training Requirements

To access this program, it is not only necessary to meet the age range established in the bilateral agreements (generally between 18 and 35 years old), but the fundamental pillar is prior training. The applicant must have completed a university or technical degree, as the job position in Switzerland must be directly related to their studies.


2. The Employment Contract: Axis of the Process

The Swiss migration process is atypical because it cannot be initiated without a firm job offer. The candidate must independently manage a full-time employment contract that meets the salary standards of the corresponding canton. Once signed, the employer plays an active role in validating the file before the local authorities.


3. Documentation and Administrative Procedures

The application must be submitted in an organized manner to the Swiss representation (embassy or consulate) abroad. Essential documents include:


  • Official Forms: National Visa Type D applications duly completed.

  • Academic Documentation: Copies of degrees and certificates accrediting professional training.

  • Internship Contract: The original document signed by the Swiss company.

  • Health Insurance: A policy with full coverage for the Swiss territory during the entire stay.

Mention of the Ticket: Within the file, it is mandatory to include proof of reservation for the return ticket to the country of origin. In the event of not having the ticket at the time of application, the applicant must convincingly demonstrate that they have sufficient financial resources to purchase it once their work period has ended.


4. The Path to Approval

Once the documentation is submitted, the file is sent to Switzerland for review by the canton and the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM). This process usually takes between 6 and 10 weeks. If the evaluation is positive, an authorization is issued that allows the applicant to obtain their visa or entry permit to the country.
