The Austrian government has officially launched the 2026 cycle of its Working Holiday program (Visa D), establishing itself as one of the European destinations with the widest diversity of active agreements. With a limited number of slots and an appointment management system that varies by region, this year's process is notable for its simultaneous opening across three continents.

Opening calendar and availability by region
Unlike single-quota programs, Austria manages its vacancies independently for each partner country. The system for the 2026 cycle was generally enabled during the month of January:
Region | Partner Countries | 2026 Opening Date | Quotas / Availability |
Americas | Argentina, Chile, Canada, USA | January 5th to 19th | Limited (approx. 160-200 per country). |
Oceania | Australia, New Zealand | Open (Rolling basis) | Moderate availability. |
Asia | Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong | January 15th | High demand in urban centers. |
Middle East | Israel | January 2026 | Stable availability. |
In the case of Chile and Argentina, appointments are released periodically. It is reported that slots for March and April are already being assigned; interested parties should monitor the system every Thursday (especially at 3:00 PM local time in Chile) to catch cancellations.
Key requirements for global application
For this 2026 cycle, Austrian authorities have ratified the eligibility criteria, reminding applicants that the visa allows a stay of up to 12 months (with the exception of New Zealand, whose agreement is usually limited to 6 months).
Financial funds and solvency
Applicants must demonstrate possession of at least 1,500 EURĀ in liquid funds. This amount must be available in an account under the applicant's name. In addition to the base amount, proof of a pre-purchased return ticket or sufficient additional funds for its purchase must be provided. For Australian and Canadian nationals, additional proof of higher education may be required.
Health insurance and Schengen coverage
Medical insurance is a critical document with no exceptions. A minimum coverage of 30,000 EURĀ is required, including hospitalization and medical repatriation, valid for the entire Schengen territory during the 365 days of the stay.
Age and application conditions
The program is aimed at young people between 18 and 30 years oldĀ (inclusive). It is possible to apply at 30 years of age, provided the application is submitted before turning 31. The passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended departure date from Austria.
Application procedure and costs
Document submission is an in-person process that must be carried out at the Austrian representation (Embassy or Consulate) corresponding to the applicant's country of citizenship or legal residence. In certain regions such as Oceania or North America, management may be handled through authorized centers like VFS Global.
Consular costs for this year range between 150 and 195 EUR, depending on the location and the exchange rate applied at the time of payment. The Visa DĀ stamping process usually takes between 2 to 4 weeks after the interview.
PRO TIP: BOOKING STRATEGY
Given the competitive nature of the quotas (e.g., the limit of 200 for Chile or 160 for Canada), it is recommended to start preparing your application folder 4 months in advance. If you plan to travel for the start of the winter or summer season in the Alps, secure your appointment in the first quarter of the year to guarantee your spot in the 2026 annual quota.
