When planning a year of life in Brazil under the Working Holiday program, one of the most frequent inquiries is the possibility of extending the stay beyond the initial period. However, the regulations governing the VITEM VI visa are explicit regarding its validity and the non-extendable nature of the residence permit. Below, we analyze the legal limitations and the available options for those who wish to prolong their presence in Brazilian territory in accordance with the guidelines of Itamaraty.

A maximum stay of 12 months
For all participating nationalities (Germany, Australia, South Korea, France, and New Zealand), the visa is granted for a single and maximum period of 12 months (365 days).
Non-extendable nature: Legally, the Brazil Working Holiday Visa does not allow for extensions or renewals under the same category. Once the year of stay has concluded, the residence permit expires automatically.
Once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: Bilateral agreements establish that this benefit can be enjoyed only once in a lifetime. It is not possible to apply for a second Brazil Working Holiday Visa, even from a different consulate or after spending time outside the country.
Change of purpose of residence
If a participant wishes to remain in Brazil for longer than the permitted year, the only legal way is to process a change of immigration status before their current visa expires. This process is not an extension of the Working Holiday, but the start of a new residence category that requires meeting specific requirements:
Work Residency (Visto de Trabalho): Requires a formal contract with a Brazilian company that justifies the need for a skilled worker and prior approval from the Ministry of Labor and Employment.
Study Residency (Visto de Estudante): Requires enrollment in an undergraduate, postgraduate, or long-term academic program at an educational institution recognized by the Ministry of Education (MEC).
Any change of category must be managed directly with the Federal Police and the Ministry of Justice within Brazilian territory, always before the VITEM VI visa expires.
