One of the most frequent questions among participants of the Working Holiday in Finland program is the possibility of extending their stay once the initial period is over. It is essential to understand the legal limitations of this permit to correctly plan your future in the country. You can find detailed advice in Volare's Finland Working Holiday section.

Duration and non-extendable nature of the permit
The Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) stipulates that the Working Holiday Visa has a maximum and non-extendable validity of 12 months. From a legal standpoint, this permit cannot be extended under the same category.
It is not possible to apply for a second Working Holiday Visa for Finland to extend your stay for holiday purposes, as bilateral agreements establish that this program is a once-in-a-lifetime participation per person. At the end of the year of stay, the holder must leave Finnish territory or have processed a change of residency purpose.
Change of residency purpose
Although the visa itself does not allow for extensions, the Finnish system permits foreigners to apply for a change of status if they meet the conditions for another residency category. To stay in Finland beyond the initial 12 months, a new permit must be processed before the current one expires:
Employee permit: If the holder secures a continuous and formal job offer during the year, they can apply for a residence permit based on employment from within Finland.
Student permit: If the participant is accepted into a full-time academic program (Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctorate), they can manage a status change to a student permit.
It is imperative to start these procedures while the original Working Holiday Visa is still valid to avoid falling into an irregular stay situation.
