One of the most frequent questions among travelers is whether it is possible to prolong their stay once the initial period of their Working Holiday Visa (WHV) approaches its end. The short answer is yes, although the conditions and duration of such an extension strictly depend on the passport used for the application and the fulfillment of certain labor requirements in strategic sectors for the New Zealand economy.

Working Holiday Maker Extension (Seasonal Work)
For the vast majority of participating nations—including Argentina, Chile, Spain, Mexico, Peru, and Uruguay—there is the possibility of obtaining a one-time 3-month extension. The fundamental requirement to access this benefit is to have completed at least three months of paid work in the horticulture or viticulture industries.
This type of employment, commonly known as "field work," allows visa holders to collaborate in harvesting, packing, or crop maintenance during peak seasons. It is imperative that the applicant keeps proof of this employment, such as payslips or contracts, to present them to Immigration New Zealand when applying for the extension.
Special Agreements: Canada and the United Kingdom
There are two notable exceptions where bilateral agreements allow for significantly longer stays without necessarily resorting to field work for the initial extension:
Canada: Due to a special agreement, Canadian citizens can enjoy a total stay and extensions totaling up to 23 months.
United Kingdom: Citizens of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have the most extensive agreement, allowing them to apply for or extend their stay for a total of up to 36 months (3 years).
