One of the most frequently asked questions among travelers is whether it is possible to prolong their stay once the initial period of their visa nears its end. The short answer is yes, although the conditions and duration of said extension depend strictly on the passport you applied with and the fulfillment of certain labor requirements in strategic sectors. To help you plan your long-term adventure, below we break down the Immigration New Zealand regulations for the renewal of your stay and the current diplomatic exceptions.

Summary Board Extension Rules by Country

The possibilities of permanence are not equal for everyone. The New Zealand government classifies the extension options based on the bilateral agreements of each nation:

Nationality (Passport)

Extension Limit

Renewal and Permanence Rule

🌎 General Rule: Argentina, Chile, Spain, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay, and the rest of the nations with a standard agreement.

3 additional months

Conditioned Extension. Allows prolonging the stay for a single period of 3 months, conditioned upon having performed field work (horticulture or viticulture).

🇨🇦 Canada

Up to 23 months in total

Special Agreement. Due to an expanded bilateral treaty, Canadian citizens can enjoy a total stay and extensions higher than the standard, without the agricultural work requirement.

🇬🇧 United Kingdom

Up to 36 months in total

Historical Privilege. Citizens of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland hold the most extensive agreement, allowing them to request a stay of up to 3 years, without the field work requirement.

Seasonal Work Extension (Working Holiday Maker Extension)

For citizens belonging to the General Rule (the vast majority of Hispanic and European applicants), the 3-month extension is not an automatic right. The exclusive requirement to access this benefit is to have completed at least three months of paid work in the horticulture or viticulture industries.

This type of employment, commonly known as "farm work", allows visa holders to collaborate in the planting, harvesting, packing, or maintenance of fruit and vegetable crops during peak agricultural seasons.

It is imperative that the applicant keeps official proof of this employment. At the time of requesting the extension before Immigration, you must present the official payslips issued by your employer or contracts that irrefutably certify the time worked in the agricultural sector.
