Can I extend my South Korea Working Holiday Visa?

Volare Global | February 18, 2026

One of the most frequent questions when planning a year in the Republic of Korea is whether there is a possibility to prolong the stay once the initial period has ended. The nature of the H-1 visa is temporary and "once in a lifetime," which imposes strict restrictions that vary significantly according to each country's bilateral agreement.

1. The General Rule: Is an extension possible?

For the vast majority of nationalities the short answer is no. The H-1 Visa is granted for a maximum period of 12 months and is not renewable under the same category. Once the permit expires, the participant must leave the country. Furthermore, this visa can only be obtained once per person; if you have already used your Working Holiday in Korea, you cannot reapply in the future, even if you change your passport.

2. Exceptions by Nationality (2026 Cycle)

There are specific agreements where the duration or structure of the program allows for a longer stay or a split in time:

  • United Kingdom (UK): Historically, the agreement with the United Kingdom has allowed stays of up to 24 months (2 years), often structured as an initial year with the possibility of a technical extension.

  • United States (WEST Program): Due to its academic and internship focus, American participants can obtain permits for 12 to 18 months, depending on the specific sub-program they are enrolled in.

  • Canada: Under the new expanded mobility agreement for 2024-2026, Canadian citizens enjoy greater flexibility, although the standard limit for the Working Holiday category usually remains at one year.

3. Strategies and Tips: How to stay longer

If your goal is to stay in Korea beyond the 12 months of your WHV, the only legal path is to perform a Change of Immigration Status before your residence card (ARC) expires.

Change to a Work Visa (E-7) or Job Search (D-10)

If during your Working Holiday year you manage to secure a contract with a Korean company that requires specific skills (and you possess a university degree), you could attempt a change to an E-7 visa. If the contract is not immediate but you have the professional profile, the D-10 visa (Job Seeker) is an option to stay for an additional 6 months to seek formal employment.

Pro Tips from Volare Global for your Stay

  1. Monitor your ARC: The expiration date of your Alien Registration Card is the law. Start any visa change process at least 2 months before it expires.

  2. Leverage the Korean Language: Do not underestimate the power of the language. To change from a WHV to a work or professional study visa, the TOPIK certificate is almost always mandatory. Use your 6 permitted study months to obtain a good score.

  3. Entry and Re-entry: Remember that the H-1 is a multiple-entry visa. You can leave and enter Korea as many times as you want during your year, but this does not "pause" the 12-month clock. Time continues to run from the day of your first validation at immigration.
