Extension Policy

The WHV visa cannot be extended. Under no circumstances is it allowed to extend the validity of an open work permit of this type beyond the time initially granted by the officer at the point of entry. If a participant wishes to stay longer in the country, they must apply for a change of immigration status or a new work permit before the current one expires, which requires meeting entirely different requirements.

When planning the end of your stay, it is imperative to consider the cost of your flight ticket back home or to your next destination, as you must leave the country promptly upon the document's expiration.

Participation according to the Bilateral Agreement

Although an extension is not possible, some citizens have the option to apply to the program again in future seasons. This depends exclusively on the agreement signed between Canada and the applicant's country of origin.

GROUP 1: Single participation

For these nationalities, the WHV visa cannot be extended, and the bilateral agreement allows for only 1 participation in a lifetime.

• Countries: Andorra, Belgium, Denmark, Hong Kong, Iceland, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Portugal, and Taiwan.

GROUP 2: Up to two participations

In this case, the WHV visa cannot be extended; however, the bilateral agreement allows for up to 2 participations in a lifetime.

• Countries: Germany, Chile, South Korea, Costa Rica, Croatia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Estonia, Greece, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Netherlands, Poland, United Kingdom, Czech Republic, San Marino, Sweden, and Switzerland.

GROUP 3: Up to three participations

For the group with the most flexibility, the WHV visa cannot be extended; however, the bilateral agreement allows for up to 3 participations in a lifetime.

• Countries: Australia, Austria, Finland, France, and Ireland.
