One of the most frequent questions among participants in Working Holiday programs is the possibility of extending their stay once the initial period has expired. In the case of Norway, the answer is not uniform, as it depends strictly on the bilateral agreements signed between the Kingdom of Norway and each country of origin. Below, we detail the conditions of stay and extension divided by nationality groups.

Group 1 (Argentina, Japan, New Zealand, and Andorra)
For citizens of these countries, the regulations are clear: the residence permit is valid for a maximum of 12 months and is legally non-extendable. This means there is no possibility of extending the Working Holiday Visa under the same category.
If the participant wishes to continue residing in Norway once their year is over, they must process a different type of residence visa (such as a study visa or a skilled worker visa) before their current permit expires and by meeting the requirements of the new category.
Group 2 (Australia)
Australian citizens have an exception within the Norwegian system. The agreement allows participants to obtain the permit for up to two years in total. A noteworthy point of this treaty is that the visa can be renewed even if the applicant has already exceeded the age limit of 31, provided that the renewal is carried out continuously after the first year.
Group 3 (Canada)
For young Canadians, it is possible to participate in the program up to two times, allowing for a maximum total stay of 2 years. However, there is an important bureaucratic restriction: the second application requires the participant to carry out an activity in a different category from the first permit (for example, if the first year was under the general stream, the second could be under an internship or exchange).
