One of the most frequent questions among applicants for the H-1 Visa is whether this permit, originally designed for tourism and work, also allows for academic training. The short answer is yes, but there are temporal and regulatory limitations that every traveler must know to avoid compromising their immigration status in the Republic of Korea.

1. The Study Permit: The "Academic Offer"
The South Korean Working Holiday Visa is, in essence, a cultural exchange program. Therefore, authorities encourage participants to integrate into Korean society through language and culture learning.
Are there time restrictions?
Yes. The current Hi Korea regulations establish a clear restriction: H-1 Visa holders may undertake Korean language studies or technical training for a maximum period of 6 months during their one-year stay.
Exceeding this study limit could require a change to a student visa (D-4 or D-2), which would void the WHV work permit. It is important to note that courses must be taken at private institutions or language centers, as this visa does not allow for full-time university degree programs.
2. Academic Level Required to Apply
After a technical verification of the eligibility criteria for the 2026 cycle, previous education requirements are divided into two main categories:
Nationalities with Tertiary or University Education Requirements
For the following nations, the bilateral agreement requires the applicant to be a current higher education student or a graduate (tertiary/university):
United States (under the WEST program)
In these cases, a high school diploma is not sufficient; a certificate of enrollment or a legalized degree/postgraduate diploma must be presented.
Nationalities with Secondary Education Requirements
For all other nationalities with a current agreement (including Spain, Chile, Argentina, Mexico, Poland, Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, among others), the minimum requirement is to have completed Secondary Education (Baccalaureate, Secondary License, or High School).
At the time of application, these citizens only need to present the certificate of the highest level of education achieved (with secondary school being the minimum accepted base) along with its respective apostille.
