The Japanese government, through the regulations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), allows visa holders to participate in short-term academic activities, provided that study is not the primary purpose of the stay in the country.

One of the most frequent questions for those applying to the Japan Working Holiday program is whether they can use their year abroad to perfect the language or take technical courses. The answer is yes, although there are strict legal limitations that depend on the bilateral agreement signed with each nation.
Classification of academic activity by nationality
To regulate the flow of students and ensure that the spirit of the visa (vacation and work) is maintained, two control groups have been established:
Group 1: Incidental Study (The Vast Majority)
Nationalities: All except for Australia
Regulation: Language courses or short-term studies are permitted without a predefined month limit, provided they are a secondary activity and not the main reason for the trip.
Prohibition: Under no circumstances is it permitted to pursue undergraduate, postgraduate, or doctoral university degrees. For formal long-term academic purposes, it is mandatory to apply for a Student Visa.
Group 2: Case with Specific Time Limit
Nationality: Australia.
Regulation: Australian citizens have a clear temporary restriction. Language courses or short-term studies are permitted for a maximum period of 4 months.
Consequence: Exceeding this study time within the same visa year requires a change of immigration status to a student visa, invalidating the Working Holiday.
Language requirements: Is an official exam necessary?
A fundamental point in the application process is the required language level. It is important to clarify that to access the Japan Working Holiday Visa it is not mandatory to present any official language exam (such as the JLPT for Japanese or TOEFL/IELTS for English).
However, from a logistical and professional perspective, basic knowledge is recommended for the following reasons:
Job placement: Although not required for the visa, the vast majority of local employers (outside the language teaching or international tourism sector) require a minimum communicative level.
Autonomy: Basic mastery of the language greatly facilitates the management of administrative procedures upon arrival in Japan (residency registration, opening a bank account, etc.).
