Can I study with the Netherlands Working Holiday Visa?

Volare Editorial | March 12, 2026

One of the most frequent questions when planning your Working Holiday in Holland (the Netherlands) is related to language requirements and the possibility of studying in the country. In this Volare Global article, we explain everything you need to know to prepare your trip without doubts.

The Immigration and Naturalisation Service of the Netherlands (IND) does not impose any language proficiency requirement for the approval of this residence permit under the Working Holiday program. Therefore, it is not necessary to present any approved international exam or demonstrate a specific level of Dutch or English at the time of applying for the visa.

Regarding academic training, the IND stipulates that the main objective of this program is cultural exchange. However, the regulations explicitly allow participants to follow a short study or course during their stay in the country.

Details to consider:

  • Educational limits: You can enroll in language courses, workshops, or short-term training. It is vital to understand that enrolling in a full-time university degree would distort the purpose of the visa and, in that case, the authorities would require processing an exclusive residence permit for studies.

Planning your cultural exchange knowing your permissions and limitations is the most important step to ensure the success of your experience. If you have doubts about these or other requirements, at Volare Global we are ready to accompany you on your journey.
