Can the Denmark Working Holiday Visa be Extended?

Volare Editorial | February 4, 2026

Denmark has consolidated itself as one of Scandinavia's most attractive destinations for the Volare community, thanks to its high quality of life and the balance it offers between work and leisure. However, as the 12-month adventure nears its end, the big question arises: Is there any way to extend the stay?

Below, we analyze the regulations of the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI) regarding the duration of this permit for countries with a valid agreement.

1. The 12-Month Rule

For citizens of the nationalities that are part of our community and have an agreement (Argentina, Chile, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand), the regulations are strict:

  • Maximum Duration: The residence permit under the Working Holiday program is granted for a maximum period of 12 months.

  • Non-extendable: Unlike other types of permits, the Working Holiday in Denmark cannot be extended. Once the year is up, the permit expires, and the holder must leave the country or have changed their immigration status before the expiration date.

  • Once in a lifetime: You can only participate in this program once per nationality you hold.

2. The Myth of the Work Extension

It is important not to confuse the extension of a work contract with the extension of the visa. Even if your employer in Copenhagen or Aarhus wants you to continue working, the Working Holiday visa has specific time restrictions for employment:

  • In Denmark, you can generally only work for a maximum of 6 months out of your total year-long stay (although you are allowed to study for the full 12 months).

  • This labor limit reinforces the program's nature as a cultural exchange and not as a path for permanent short-term labor immigration.

3. How to Stay Longer? Change of Status

If your goal is to stay in Denmark legally after your WHV year, the path is not the extension of the same permit, but rather applying for a new residence permit based on other grounds:

Residence Permit for Studies

If you decide to enroll in a Danish university or a higher education program, you can apply for a student permit.

  • Advantage: Denmark has world-class institutions.

  • Requirement: You must be accepted by an educational institution and demonstrate sufficient funds for your maintenance and tuition fees (if applicable).

Qualified Work Permit (Pay Limit Scheme)

If you receive a job offer with a salary that exceeds the minimum threshold established by the Danish government (Pay Limit Scheme), you could apply for a work permit independent of the Working Holiday.
