Cost Breakdown Working Holiday Visa Canada

Volare Editorial | March 24, 2026

Planning your application for the Working Holiday Visa requires a clear understanding of the initial investment needed. The process is divided between the mandatory fees paid directly to the Canadian government and the external logistical expenses that ensure the validity of the application and entry into the country.

Official IRCC Fees

For the current season, the total cost of fees required by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) amounts to CAD 369.75. This amount must be paid by credit or debit card once the candidate receives the Invitation to Apply (ITA) and is broken down as follows:

  • IEC Participation Fee: CAD 184.75.

  • Open Work Permit Holder Fee: CAD 100.00.

  • Biometrics Fee: CAD 85.00.

It is important to note that creating a profile in the candidate pool is free; charges are only generated after a formal invitation.

Mandatory External Expenses

Beyond administrative payments, there are documentary and health requirements that represent a variable investment depending on the applicant's country of origin:

  • Travel Insurance: This is an unavoidable requirement that must cover the total duration of the stay. The cost varies according to coverage, but it is essential for the border official to grant the permit for the maximum period allowed.

  • Medical Exams: Depending on nationality or if you plan to work in specific sectors (health, education, or childcare), IRCC may request a medical exam performed by an authorized panel physician.

  • Official Translations: All documents that are not originally in English or French, such as police certificates or academic degrees, must have a certified translation.

  • Police Certificates: Some countries or jurisdictions may charge a fee for the issuance of these certificates required for the security stage.

Maintenance Funds and Logistics

Upon landing in Canada, the participant must prove they possess sufficient financial means for their initial establishment.

  • Proof of Funds: It is mandatory to present a bank statement showing possession of at least CAD 2,500 (or its equivalent in local currency).

  • The Flight Ticket: The budget must include the cost of the flight ticket to Canada and, preferably, the return ticket. If you do not have a return ticket at the time of entry, the officer may require proof of additional funds to cover this expense in the future.
