Criminal Records for the Luxembourg Working Holiday Visa

Written by Volare | May 22, 2026

When preparing your file to apply for the Luxembourg Working Holiday Visa (WHV), demonstrating impeccable conduct is a fundamental step. The authorities of the Grand Duchy are very strict regarding the legal history of applicants wishing to enter their territory.

Mandatory requirement for all nationalities

For citizens of Australia, Canada, Chile, South Korea, Japan, New Zealand, and Taiwan, the requirement is the same: yes, a police certificate from the country of origin is required. It is mandatory to present a recently issued official criminal record extract, which must irrefutably certify that the applicant does not possess any type of criminal history.

The document format: Physical and official

Unlike other immigration processes that sometimes allow a simple sworn statement, the Directorate of Immigration of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs strictly requires the presentation of a real and physical official criminal record certificate (casier judiciaire). This document is the only valid proof to demonstrate that the applicant has a completely clean police record.

Validity, translations, and legalization

For the document to be accepted, you must pay attention to three vital technical factors:

  1. Maximum age: As a general rule, the criminal record certificate must have been issued with a maximum age of 3 months at the time of submitting the application. There is a specific exception for certain nationalities; for example, for Canadian citizens processing their certificate through the RCMP, an extended validity of up to 6 months can be accepted.

  2. Sworn translation: If the original document issued by the police in your country is not written in French, German, or English, it must mandatorily be subject to the official sworn translation rule into one of these three vehicular languages.

  3. International legalization: Depending on your country of origin, it is highly likely that the document must have The Hague Apostille to guarantee its legal validity internationally before consular authorities.
