One of the most recurring doubts among participants of the youth mobility program is the possibility of extending their stay in Mexican territory once the initial period has ended. The guidelines established by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) and the National Institute of Migration (INM) are strict regarding the temporality of this visa, which is granted under a legal framework of international reciprocity.

Duration and exit policies
The maximum duration of stay under the Working Holiday scheme in Mexico is 12 non-extendable months. Regulations indicate that, at the end of this period, the holder must leave the country or manage a change of stay status if they meet the requirements for another immigration category. However, there are important nuances depending on the applicant's country of origin:
Canada: Canadian citizens have a stay limited to 12 months. Upon completion, they must leave Mexico or apply for another residency. A distinctive aspect of this agreement is that it allows a second participation in the program, provided there is an interval of at least 3 years between both stays.
Chile, Colombia, France, New Zealand, and Peru: For these nationalities, the maximum stay is also 12 months. When the granted period expires, the holder is obliged to leave Mexico. Should they desire a different residence permit, this must generally be managed from a consular representation outside Mexican territory.
Rigorousness in exit and return control
The National Institute of Migration (INM) strictly supervises that participants do not exceed the 365 days of stay permitted by the temporary residence visa. The non-extendable nature of this visa implies that the holder must have planned their departure logistics sufficiently in advance. In this sense, financial planning for the departure is a component evaluated from the moment of the consular interview.
Regardless of the trip's reason, it is mandatory to present a return flight ticket reservation or, failing that, to prove the possession of additional and sufficient economic funds that guarantee the purchase of said ticket to return to your country of origin once the permitted stay has concluded. This provision ensures that the traveler has the logistical capacity to comply with the mandatory exit regulations, avoiding irregular stay situations that could compromise future entries into the country.
Development of activities and status transition
Given that the stay has a defined limit, participants must optimize their time to fulfill the cultural exchange objectives of the program. The visa structure allows the young person to integrate into local life while maintaining a robust legal support structure. The visa allows access to the local academic offer to carry out studies or short-term courses, such as language workshops or technical specializations, provided these activities do not exceed the validity period of the permit.
If a participant wishes to remain in Mexico under a different condition (such as a long-term formal job offer or residency through family ties), they must initiate a change of stay status process before the INM offices before the expiration of their current residence card. However, for most bilateral agreements, the general policy favors these transitions being managed through a new visa application from abroad, reinforcing the temporary and rotating nature of the holiday and work scheme.
