Volare Editorial | April 3, 2026

Calculating the necessary budget for a Working Holiday in Italy requires considering both direct payments to the authorities and prior logistical expenses. The process is divided into application costs and mandatory regularization costs upon arrival in the country. For a detailed breakdown, you can consult Volare's Italy Working holiday section.

Breakdown of official and administrative fees

The financial cost of the visa depends on the bilateral agreement established with each participating country:

  • Official consular fee (Australia, Canada, South Korea, Hong Kong, and New Zealand): The cost for processing and studying the long-stay visa (Type D) is €116.00. This payment is generally made in person during the appointment at the consulate and is non-refundable.

  • Official consular fee (Japan): Under the current bilateral treaty, the processing of the Working Holiday Visa is free of charge for Japanese citizens.

  • Regularization expenses (Permesso di soggiorno): Regardless of nationality, all holders must apply for their residence permit within the first 8 business days of arrival in Italy. This procedure has an approximate cost of €86.00, which includes the postal kit fee, the cost of the electronic card, and the mandatory revenue stamp (marca da bollo).

External investments and file logistics

Beyond government fees, the applicant must consider external expenses that are essential for the document folder to be accepted by the consular officer:

  1. International health insurance: The cost of a private policy with a minimum coverage of 30,000 euros for the 12 months of uninterrupted stay.

  2. Translations and Apostilles: Fees for the official translation into Italian or English of bank documents or certificates, as well as the cost of the Hague Apostille to validate international documentation.

  3. Shipping and management: Courier expenses for sending files or travel to the corresponding consular jurisdiction for biometric data capture.

Critical return and solvency requirements

It is imperative to remember that compliance with administrative costs does not exempt the applicant from demonstrating their financial capacity for return. As part of the program's pillars, it is mandatory to present proof of your return ticket already paid for or, failing that, demonstrate possession of sufficient additional funds to purchase it in the future.

Furthermore, final visa approval is subject to the demonstration of the specific funds guide for each nationality, guaranteeing that the participant has sufficient resources for their initial maintenance in Italian territory.
