Do I need to present medical exams for the Finland WHV?

Volare Editorial | April 2, 2026

When organizing the documentation for a Working Holiday in Finland, many applicants wonder if they must undergo prior health checks. It is essential to know what the Immigration Service requires and what it omits to optimize management times. You can find the full list of requirements in Volare's Finland Working Holiday section.

Absence of mandatory medical exams

The Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) does not require the presentation of medical exams, blood tests, chest X-rays, or physical health certificates as a prerequisite for the approval of the Working Holiday Visa.

Unlike other international destinations that require tuberculosis tests or official medical certificates, Finnish regulations for this temporary residence permit do not include these documents in their list of mandatory attachments. The assessment of the applicant's fitness is based on compliance with age and nationality criteria and the self-declaration made in the application form.

Health insurance as a preventive substitute

While clinical exams are not requested, Migri offsets health risk management by requiring the purchase of comprehensive private medical insurance (mandatory for citizens of Canada, Japan, and New Zealand). This policy ensures that any medical eventuality during the stay is covered privately, without representing a burden on the Finnish public system.

It is important to remember that, although health certificates are not required for the visa, certain employers in specific sectors (such as health or food) might request particular health tests once the permit holder is in Finland and begins the job search.

Mandatory compliance requirements

For the application to be processed successfully, the applicant must focus their efforts on the pillars that Migri does strictly verify. As part of the essential return documentation, it is mandatory to attach proof of your return ticket already paid for or, failing that, evidence of sufficient additional funds to purchase it in the future.

Likewise, the minimum financial solvency of 2,450 euros required to guarantee the participant's initial maintenance in the territory must be clearly proven.
