Do I need to provide criminal records for the New Zealand Working Holiday visa?

Compliance with character requirements is a fundamental part of any immigration application. Immigration New Zealand assesses the suitability of applicants to ensure that all visitors meet public safety standards. However, the requirement to submit police certificates varies according to the bilateral agreement and, primarily, the total time the traveler plans to remain in the country.

Evaluation Criteria and Nationalities

In the vast majority of Working Holiday agreements, the initial application process is streamlined and does not require uploading judicial documents. For citizens of Germany, Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, South Korea, Croatia, Denmark, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, United States, Estonia, Philippines, Finland, France, Holland, Hong Kong, Hungary, Ireland (Republic), Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Norway, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Singapore, Sweden, Thailand, Taiwan, Turkey, Uruguay, and Vietnam, the general rule indicates that it is not necessary to submit police certificates immediately.

Nevertheless, there is a cumulative time clause that all applicants must consider: if you have spent or plan to spend a total of 24 months or more in New Zealand (adding previous visas or extensions), a police certificate from your country of citizenship and from any other country where you have lived for 5 years or more since turning 17 will become mandatory.

The Special Case of the United Kingdom

Due to extended extension agreements, citizens of the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland) have a different regulatory framework. For this group, providing police certificates is a mandatory requirement in the following cases:

  • When applying for the visa for the full 36-month period (3 years).

  • If the total cumulative stay in the country exceeds 24 months.
