Maintaining public safety is an absolute priority for the Swiss Confederation. Within the framework of the Stagiaires (Young Professionals) program, migration authorities implement rigorous controls to verify the eligibility of participants before authorizing their entry and residence in the territory.

1. Physical Certificate Requirement by Nationality
For citizens of Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, United States, Japan, Monaco, and New Zealand, it is mandatory to present a physical police certificate or criminal record. This document must come from the country of origin or from the country where the applicant has maintained their recent residence.
Since this is a public document issued abroad, it must comply with two inescapable legal formalities to be admitted by the Swiss representation:
Hague Apostille: The original document must be duly apostilled to certify its international validity.
Certified Translation: If the record is not in German, French, Italian, or English, it must be translated by a qualified professional.
2. Cantonal Delegation and Document Validity
The Swiss migration system is characterized by its federal structure, where the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) delegates security supervision to the local regulations of each region. In this sense, the vast majority of cantonal migration offices require the physical police record to proceed with the approval and subsequent issuance of the definitive residence permit.
A critical technical aspect is the age of the document. Authorities usually require the police certificate to have a maximum age of 3 months at the time of submission. Exceeding this period usually invalidates the document, forcing the applicant to restart the process of obtaining and apostilling it in their country of origin.
3. Logistical Planning and Return Commitment
Transparency in the candidate's personal history is a requirement complemented by the demonstration of a coherent and responsible travel plan.
Mention of the Ticket: Within the mandatory requirements of the file, proof of a return ticket reservation to the country of origin must be included. In situations where the applicant prefers to purchase the ticket at a later stage, the authorities will require them to convincingly prove that they possess the liquid financial resources, additional to their training salary, necessary to cover the total cost of the return flight once their professional stay in Switzerland ends.
4. A Reliable Professional Profile
Presenting a police certificate without negative records is not just an administrative step, but the foundation of trust between the young professional, their employer, and the Swiss State. Complying with the specific requirements of the receiving canton ensures that the integration process is smooth and that the issuance of the work permit is carried out without unnecessary delays. This documentary rigor ensures that the professional exchange takes place in an environment of maximum legality and security for all parties involved.
