German bureaucracy is world-famous for its efficiency, but also for its strict rigidity. When you show up at the embassy to process your Working Holiday Visa, the consular officer will not evaluate your charisma, but the precision of your folder. A missing document, a forgotten signature, or a poorly made photocopy can mean the cancellation of your appointment or the rejection of your visa.

So that you can go to your appointment with absolute confidence, we have condensed all the legal requirements into this definitive checklist, highlighting the crucial differences depending on your passport.
Summary Board: Base Documents (Universal)
Regardless of your country of origin, the first block of your file must prove your identity and the purpose of your trip. Everything must be printed in high quality:
Required Document | Official Specification for Germany | Checklist |
📑 Visa Form (VIDEX) | Completed online via the Official VIDEX National Portal, printed, and signed by hand. | $$$$ |
🛂 Valid Passport | Original and copies. Valid for a minimum of 3 months after your trip ends (ideal: 15 months of validity). | $$$$ |
📸 2 Biometric Photographs | Size 35 x 45 mm, light gray background, taken within the last 6 months. | $$$$ |
📝 Motivation Letter | Written in German or English. Must explain why you want to go to Germany and your plans. It must be signed. | $$$$ |
💼 Curriculum Vitae (CV) | Tabular (chronological) format, in German or English. No unexplained time gaps. | $$$$ |
Summary Board: Specific Requirements by Nationality
This is where the files change. In addition to the universal documents, Medical Insurance, and Funds, bilateral agreements demand extra security documents depending on your passport:
Nationality | Specific Documents to add to the folder | Volare Critical Detail |
🇦🇷 Argentina & 🇺🇾 Uruguay | Criminal Records, Accommodation Reservation (first days), and Flights. | Criminal records must be recent (less than 90 days). They do NOT need a Hague Apostille or translation. |
🇨🇱 Chile | Accommodation Reservation (first days) and Flights. | Exception: Chileans do not need to present a criminal record certificate. |
🇨🇦 🇦🇺 🇳🇿 Canada & Oceania | Mainly CV and Motivation Letter. | Generally do not ask for criminal records if applying from within Germany, but local embassies may vary. |
🇰🇷 South Korea | Detailed travel plan and Health Certificate. | Demands a much more structured itinerary than for Latin Americans. |
🇯🇵 Japan | Travel plan (month-by-month itinerary). | They enjoy the most simplified bureaucratic process. |
Summary Board: Financial and Health Backing
This is the critical block where 90% of rejections happen. Every receipt must comply with the exact parameters demanded by the Federal Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt):
Mandatory Requirement | Details and Presentation Format | Checklist |
💰 Solvency (Maintenance) | Bank statements from the last 3 months. Prove a minimum of 1,200 € in your name. | $$$$ |
✈️ Flights or Extra Funds | Flight reservations. If you do not have a return ticket, you must add an extra 1,000 € (Total: 2,200 €). | $$$$ |
🏥 "Incoming" Medical Insurance | Policy valid for exactly 365 days from your flight. Coverage of 30,000 €, with repatriation and "Zero Deductible". | $$$$ |
💵 Consular Fee | 75 € (Euros). Paid in cash, local currency, and exact amount on the day of the appointment (Exception: Japan and internal applications). | $$$$ |
The rule of order and photocopies
Having the documents is important, but how you present them is vital for the German consulate. Embassies demand a non-negotiable presentation structure:
Separate Sets: Generally, you must present one (1) set containing the original documents and one or two (1-2) exact photocopy sets (check your specific embassy's instructions).
Order Matters: Papers cannot be handed in randomly. They must be stacked in the exact order they appear on the requirements sheet.
Zero Staples: It is strictly forbidden to staple documents. Hand them in loose or in transparent folios. Staples ruin the consular scanners.
