A very frequent doubt among young people applying for the South Korea Working Holiday Visa (H-1) is related to the academic offer: What educational level do I need to apply and what can I study once I land in Seoul?

Although the spirit of the visa is mainly for vacations and cultural exchange with incidental work, the diplomatic regulations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) establish very precise rules both for the pre-application requirements and for the permitted academic activities inside the country.

Summary Board Previous academic requirements

Unlike other highly qualified work visas, the Working Holiday has a more flexible academic profile, although the documentary requirement strictly depends on your passport at the time of assembling your consular folder.

Nationality Profile

Required Educational Level

Documentary Requirement Detail

🌎 General Rule (Latin America, Europe, Oceania)

Flexible (No mandatory university degree)

Being enrolled in a university is not exclusive. They only require you to present the diploma of your highest educational level achieved (whether secondary/high school or university degree).

🇺🇸 Strict Exception (United States)

Active or Recent University Student

They operate under the WEST program. It obligatorily requires demonstrating being an active university student or having graduated no more than 12 months before applying for the visa.

Summary Board Language requirements to apply

Many applicants mistakenly assume they need to speak perfect Korean to get their visa approved. The consular reality is much more accessible, but it has strict bureaucratic rules.

Procedure Element

Summary Board Study limits by country

Once in South Korean territory, regulations allow you to enroll in private institutions and language academies (hakwons), but the time you can dedicate to informal studying is limited by your nationality.

Permitted and Prohibited Activities

🌎 General Rule (Argentina, Chile, Spain, Germany, France, Italy, USA, etc.)

No time limit

Permitted: Studying Korean or short technical courses. Prohibited: Enrolling in regular university degrees.

🇬🇧 Intermediate Group (Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Israel, Belgium, Denmark)

Maximum 6 months

Permitted: Language and short courses up to half a year. Prohibited: Exceeding 6 months of study or pursuing formal degrees.

🇦🇺 Maximum Restriction (Australia)

Maximum 4 months

Permitted: Language or very short courses. Prohibited: Any study that exceeds the four-month period or university level.

Transition to Higher Education (D-2 Visa)

The golden rule of MOFA is unbreakable for all nationalities: it is strictly forbidden to use the H-1 visa to pursue Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctoral degrees in Korean universities. If your main objective is to obtain a formal higher education degree, you must discard the Working Holiday and channel your trip through an academic visa.
