Extension and renewal of the Taiwan Working Holiday Visa

Written by Volare | June 4, 2026

When planning your year in Asia it is fundamental to understand the time limits of your stay and the legal procedures to prolong your permit. Below we detail the regulations established to extend this visa.

Temporary extension modality

Applies to Germany, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, South Korea, Slovakia, France, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Netherlands, Poland, United Kingdom, and the Czech Republic: Yes the visa is initially issued for a period of 180 days and allows requesting a single extension for an additional 180 days within Taiwan completing an unextendable maximum of 1 year.

Technical procedure before the immigration authority

On a technical level the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) and the Bureau of Consular Affairs (BOCA) of Taiwan manage the stay conditions for the youth mobility program based on the precise stipulations of each bilateral reciprocity treaty. The formal mechanism establishes that the visa is granted to the applicant with an initial stay validity of 180 days. To prolong the stay the visa holder must go in person to a service center of the National Immigration Agency (NIA) in Taiwan approximately 15 days before the expiration of the original term to process a complementary extension of 180 days without the need to leave the national territory.

Under no circumstances are additional extensions authorized that exceed the absolute limit of 1 total year of legal stay under this mobility scheme. Complying with the protocols of this organizational planning will ensure a smooth transition towards obtaining temporary residence allowing you to materialize your insertion into the dynamic seasonal labor market and plan your participation in the diverse short term academic offer of the region.

As a reminder to consolidate the solidity of your file it is a mandatory transversal requirement to evidence the possession of a flight ticket to leave the territory or else to present the financial documentation that irrefutably demonstrates the possession of exclusive additional funds for its future purchase.
