Extension of the Working Holiday Visa of Czech Republic

The mobility program under which the holiday and work visa is granted is designed as a cultural exchange opportunity with a strictly defined duration. For citizens of Australia, Canada, Chile, South Korea, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, Peru, and Taiwan, it is essential to understand the temporal limitations of this permit to avoid immigration irregularities.



Non-extendable nature of the permit

According to the immigration laws in force in the Czech Republic, the visa granted under this agreement has a maximum and non-extendable validity of 12 months. Unlike other types of residence permits, the Working Holiday does not allow for an extension or renewal of the same immigration status once the initial period has concluded.


This restriction is a common clause in the bilateral agreements managed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ensuring that the character of the program is maintained as a temporary stay for recreation and incidental employment.


Alternatives for staying in the country

While the holiday and work visa cannot be extended under the same concept, the Czech legal system allows foreigners to apply for a change of residence purpose. Those participants who wish to remain in the country beyond the permitted year must manage a new category of visa or residence permit before their current status expires. The most common options include:


  • Skilled work: Processing an Employee Card if the applicant has a job offer from a local company.

  • Studies: Enrollment in degree or postgraduate programs at recognized universities, which requires a specific student visa.

  • Entrepreneurship: Application for residence for business purposes for independent workers or freelancers (Zivnostensky list).


It is important to note that these status change processes must be initiated well in advance with the Ministry of the Interior, as resolution times are often extensive.


Logistics planning and the return ticket

For travelers who do not opt for a change of legal status, planning their departure from the country must be rigorous. The validity of the medical insurance and the term of the legal permit must coincide with the return date stipulated in the return ticket. Since this is a permit that does not allow for an extension, migration authorities expect the young person to leave the national territory or the Schengen Area on the date indicated in the return ticket.


Failing to have a confirmed reservation for the return ticket or exceeding the permitted length of stay may result in financial penalties and future entry bans to the European Union.
