How long do the New Zealand Working Holiday Visa quotas last

One of the most significant challenges for aspirants of the Working Holiday Visa (WHV) for New Zealand is time management on opening day. The availability of slots is not uniform; while for some nations obtaining a quota is an extreme speed competition, for others, it is an administrative process that can be completed calmly at any time of the year.

High Demand: Quotas that sell out in minutes

For a large group of countries, demand massively exceeds the supply of annual slots. In nations such as Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Peru, and Uruguay, as well as in various European and Asian countries (Austria, Brazil, China, Croatia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Philippines, Hong Kong, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Thailand, and Turkey), quotas usually sell out in a matter of minutes or very few hours after their official opening by Immigration New Zealand. In these cases, prior preparation and connection speed are decisive factors for application success.

Moderate Demand and Extended Slots

There is a middle ground where competition is notable but allows a margin of maneuver of a few days or even weeks. This scenario is common for citizens of Spain, South Korea, Israel, Malaysia, Czech Republic, Singapore, Taiwan, and Vietnam. Although they do not require an immediate response in the first minute of opening, it is recommended not to delay the application beyond the first week to secure a vacancy before the system closes the annual quota.

Prolonged Availability and Unlimited Agreements

At the opposite extreme, some agreements have a very favorable ratio between the number of slots and the volume of applicants:

  • Availability for months: Countries such as Japan and the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland) usually have quotas available for several months due to the large volume of slots granted in their bilateral agreements.

  • Unlimited quotas: For nations such as Germany, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, United States, Finland, France, Holland, Ireland (Republic), Italy, Norway, and Sweden, vacancies are unlimited. This means that citizens of these countries can apply at any time of the year without the risk of quotas running out.
