Hungary: Travel insurance guide for the Working Holiday Visa

Volare Editorial | March 15, 2026

To protect participants against any eventuality during their year in Europe, the consular authorities require the contracting of international medical insurance as a mandatory and exclusionary requirement to approve the Hungary Working Holiday Visa.

When preparing the file, presenting just any travel policy is not enough. The insurance must comply with certain very specific standards required by the Schengen area and by bilateral agreements. If the insurance does not meet these minimums, the visa will be rejected immediately.

Below, we detail the official regulations structured in three fundamental aspects that your policy must cover:

1. Mandatory coverage amount

To be eligible, the applicant must submit medical insurance that guarantees a minimum coverage of 30,000 EUR (or its equivalent in dollars) for medical, hospital, and health emergency expenses. This is the standard required throughout the Schengen area to ensure that the traveler does not represent a financial burden to the Hungarian public health system in case of illness or accident.

2. Total duration of the policy

A very common mistake is acquiring partial or installment insurance. Regulations require that the medical insurance covers the entirety of the projected stay. Since the Working Holiday Visa grants a one-year residence permit, the contracted policy must have uninterrupted validity for the exact 12 months of stay in the country. Insurances that cover only the first months under the promise of future renewal are not accepted.

3. Repatriation clause

In addition to traditional medical coverage, it is strictly mandatory that the insurance contract clearly specifies that it includes repatriation. This means that the insurer must cover the transfer expenses of the beneficiary to their country of origin in case of serious illness that prevents return by their own means, or the repatriation of mortal remains in case of death.
