🇦🇺 Is it possible to extend the Australia Working Holiday Visa

Volare Editorial | September 8, 2026

Unlike most destinations that limit the exchange experience to a strict 12-month non-extendable period, Australia offers one of the most generous and flexible stay systems in the world. The Department of Home Affairs allows participants of the Working Holiday Visa to extend their stay for up to a total of three consecutive years.

However, this extension is not an automatic right. To obtain the second or third visa, the Australian government requires travelers to contribute to the economic development of the country by performing the famous "Specified Work" in regional areas during the validity of their current visa. Below, we break down the exact rules so you can plan your long-term adventure.

The regional work extension system

The government's goal with this regulation is to encourage international youth to leave the big cities (like Sydney or Melbourne) and provide labor in rural, remote, or northern parts of Australia that suffer from worker shortages.

For your extension application to be approved in the ImmiAccount system, you must complete a minimum time of paid work in industries and postcodes pre-approved by immigration.

Summary Board Requirements for the Second and Third Visa

The number of days you must work in regional zones increases depending on which renewal you are applying for. Here we detail the exact times you must meet:

Visa to Apply For

Specified Work Requirement

Second Working Holiday Visa

You must complete a minimum of 3 months (88 calendar days) of pre-approved regional work during your first visa year.

Third Working Holiday Visa

You must complete a minimum of 6 months (179 calendar days) of pre-approved regional work during your second visa year.

Approved sectors and industries

A fatal mistake many travelers make is working in the outback and then discovering that the industry or postcode did not qualify for the extension. For most Spanish-speaking countries (which generally apply under Subclass 462), the main approved work areas are:

  1. Agriculture and Livestock: Fruit and vegetable harvesting (Farm work / Fruit picking), sheep shearing, and crop maintenance in designated regional areas.

  2. Tourism and Hospitality: Jobs in hotels, restaurants, bars, or tour guides, but exclusively if performed in Northern Australia or in extremely remote zones.

  3. Construction: Commercial or residential building jobs in regional areas.

It is the sole responsibility of the applicant to verify on the government portal that the postcode of their employer appears on the official list of eligible zones before signing the contract.

Summary Board Age Limits and Privileges

Besides complying with the regional work days, you must keep in mind that extensions are subject to the same age limits as the original visa, which vary drastically according to the bilateral agreements (passport) of each country:

Nationalities (Passports)

Age Limit to Extend

Historical Privilege or Exception

🇦🇷 🇨🇱 🇪🇸 🇵🇪 🇺🇾 Argentina, Chile, Spain, Peru, Uruguay

Up to 30 years old (inclusive).

Must strictly comply with the 88 days or 6 months of regional work to extend.

🇬🇧 United Kingdom

Up to 35 years old (inclusive).

Privilege: As of July 2024, they are exempt from doing regional work. They can renew up to 3 years without stepping on a farm.

🇮🇹 🇫🇷 🇨🇦 🇮🇪 Italy, France, Canada, Ireland

Up to 35 years old (inclusive).

The age limit is broader, but they must comply with the mandatory regional work to extend.

Volare Complete Guide

The secret to a successful renewal is documentation. During your months of regional work, you must save every pay stub (Payslip), as Immigration will require them as irrefutable proof of the days worked at the time of requesting your extension.
