Language exam and Studies for Denmark WHV

When planning an application for the Denmark Working Holiday Visa, it is common for travelers in our community to wonder if they need to certify knowledge of Danish or if they must have completed university studies. Unlike skilled worker permits or long-term study visas, this program has more flexible requirements in these areas.

1. The Myth of the Language Exam

The short answer is no. The Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI) does not require the submission of a language certificate (such as TOEFL, IELTS, or Danish exams) to grant the Working Holiday Visa.

  • No legal language barriers: You can apply for and obtain the visa even if you do not speak a word of Danish.

  • The importance of English: Although not a requirement for the visa, English is the bridge language in Denmark. For the vast majority of jobs available for WHV holders, having a conversational level of English will be essential for your initial job placement.

2. Minimum Study Level: Is a degree necessary?

Again, the regulations are very favorable for young travelers. For nationalities with an agreement (Argentina, Chile, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand), no specific minimum level of studies is required (such as university or technical degrees).

  • Focus on age and nationality: The Youth Mobility program prioritizes age range (generally up to 30 or 35 years depending on the country) and compliance with solvency and insurance requirements over your previous academic history.

IMPORTANT :

  • Utility of your studies: While not mandatory for the visa, if you hold a professional degree, we recommend bringing it apostilled and translated into English. Denmark has a highly skilled labor market, and your previous training could help you apply for jobs under the Pay Limit Scheme if you decide to change your status at the end of your year.
