Medical Exams for the Working Holiday Visa in Switzerland

However, for young people applying for the Stagiaires (Young Professionals) agreement, the process is simplified thanks to the robustness of the healthcare systems in their home countries.

1. Total Exemption for Low Incidence
For citizens of Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, United States, Japan, Monaco, and New Zealand, the application process is totally exempt from the submission of medical examinations. This measure is based on the fact that these nationalities are included in the low epidemiological incidence lists prepared by the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM).
Coming from regions with public health standards comparable to European ones, the Swiss administration waives the obligation to perform laboratory tests or general health certifications as a prerequisite for the approval of the residence and work permit.
2. Health Prevention Focus
Health control policies at the Swiss borders, coordinated by the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH/BAG), operate through a constant assessment of international risks. Although Switzerland places special emphasis on the detection and containment of diseases such as tuberculosis, applicants from the mentioned countries are not required to present chest X-rays or undergo exhaustive check-ups.
This exemption represents a significant logistical and economic advantage, allowing the young professional to focus fully on preparing their academic file and validating their training contract with the cantonal authorities.
3. Logistical Planning and Return Commitment
Despite the flexibility in health matters, migration regulations remain rigorous regarding the planning of the stay and the conclusion of the professional exchange cycle.
Mention of the Ticket: It is a mandatory condition to present proof of a return ticket reservation to the country of origin as part of the visa documentation. In situations where the applicant does not have the physical ticket at the time of their consular appointment, they must documentarily prove that they possess liquid financial resources, additional to their trainee salary, to purchase the return flight once their work experience in Switzerland has concluded.
4. Safe Immersion in the Labor Market
Not requiring prior medical exams does not exempt the participant from the responsibility of taking care of their health once in Swiss territory.
