🇳🇱 Netherlands: Application process open for Working Holiday

Volare Editorial | April 6, 2026

The Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) of the Netherlands has confirmed the official opening of the application window for the Working Holiday Program (WHP/WHS) corresponding to the 2026 cycle. This measure immediately enables the receipt of new applications for citizens of nations that maintain active youth mobility agreements with the Dutch territory.

Opening calendar and 2026 quota management

As of April 1, 2026, the system has begun processing files for young foreigners interested in residing in the country under this scheme. Unlike previous years, the IND has implemented a continuous reception that will remain active until the annual quota assigned to each nationality is exhausted. Applicants are recommended to start the process in advance, as dates for biometric data collection at consular offices tend to fill up quickly.

To facilitate document preparation, Volare has launched its new Working Holiday Netherlands Digital Guide (PDF). This technical resource centralizes IND requirements, from appointment management to fund accreditation, providing a clear path to ensure a successful application.

Cultural exchange and academic offer

This program is designed under the premise of cultural exchange, allowing participants to engage in incidental work activities for the sole purpose of financing their stay. Additionally, the visa allows access to the local academic offer to carry out studies or short-term courses, such as language workshops or technical specializations, provided these activities do not exceed the validity period of the permit.

Mandatory transportation requirement

Regardless of the trip's reason, it is mandatory to present a return flight ticket reservation or, failing that, to prove the possession of additional economic funds that guarantee the purchase of said ticket to return to your country of origin once the permitted stay has concluded. This proof is an essential element for visa validation before the immigration authorities.
