🇳🇿New Zealand : New rules for the Post Study Work Visa in 2026

Volare Editorial | March 14, 2026

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has officialized a series of adjustments to the Post Study Work Visa (PSWV), seeking to align international talent retention with the critical needs of the New Zealand labor market for the current year.

The New Zealand Post Study Work Visa allows international students who have completed an acceptable qualification in the country to stay and work for any employer. However, starting in 2026, the duration of this permit and the eligibility conditions will be more closely linked to the level of the qualification obtained and the Green List of occupations.

Duration of stay according to study level

For this cycle, authorities have ratified the duration structure based on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF):

  1. Levels 9 and 10 (Master's and Doctoral Degrees): Graduates of these levels maintain the benefit of an open work visa for a period of 3 years, regardless of their area of specialization.

  2. Level 8 (Postgraduate and Honours): The duration is typically 1 year, unless the qualification is linked to a profession that requires mandatory registration or is on the Green List, in which case it may be extended.

  3. Level 7 (Bachelor's Degrees): Graduates of degree courses lasting at least 30 weeks obtain a work visa for 3 years.

  4. Levels 4 to 7 (Diplomas and Non-degree Certificates): Eligibility for these levels is restricted solely to qualifications found on the list of eligible occupations for the Post Study Work Visa. The visa duration will be equivalent to the time spent studying in New Zealand.

Link with the Green List and strategic sectors

One of the most important updates for 2026 is the prioritization of sectors such as construction, engineering, healthcare, and teaching. Students completing studies in these areas will have faster transition processes towards permanent residency (Resident Visa) through the Straight to Residence or Work to Residence pathways.

Employment conditions and flexibility

Unlike other work visa categories, the PSWV in 2026 maintains its character as an open visa. This means that the holder can work for almost any employer in New Zealand, in any occupation, and in any location in the country, providing total flexibility to start a professional career in Oceania.

It is essential for international students to verify that their educational institution and chosen course are eligible before starting their training, as changes to the list of acceptable qualifications are reviewed semi-annually.
