🇵🇹 Portugal: 2026 Quota Opening and Current Requirements

Volare Editorial | April 15, 2026

Portugal's immigration authorities have completed the initial opening phase of the calendar for the 2026 youth mobility cycle. Following the official start of the process, the "Mobilidade Jovem" program is in the full phase of receiving and processing applications, allowing young people from nations with agreements to manage their legal stay in Portuguese territory.

According to the established schedule, the official opening of the system for receiving applications took place on February 19, 2026. Since that date, the portal has been active under the annual limited quota modality and will continue processing applications until the vacancies assigned for each participating nation in this period are exhausted.

Eligible Nationalities and Quota Management

Currently, the 2026 cycle remains open for citizens of ten nationalities that have active bilateral agreements with Portugal: Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, Japan, New Zealand, Peru, South Korea, United States, and Uruguay.

The administration maintains the appointment system optimized to ensure an efficient distribution of remaining spots. Applicants must meet the age requirement, generally between 18 and 30 years old (extending to 35 for certain nationalities depending on the specific agreement), and submit documentation duly legalized and apostilled at the corresponding consular office.

Cultural Exchange and Academic Offer

This program is designed under the premise of cultural exchange, allowing participants to engage in incidental work activities for the sole purpose of financing their stay. Additionally, the visa allows access to the local academic offer to carry out studies or short-term courses, such as language workshops or technical specializations, provided these activities do not exceed the validity period of the permit. This possibility of educational training is a fundamental pillar for fostering greater integration into Portuguese society during the year of residence.

Mandatory Transportation Requirement

Regardless of the trip's reason, it is mandatory to present a return flight ticket reservation or, failing that, to prove the possession of additional and sufficient economic funds that guarantee the purchase of said ticket to return to your country of origin once the permitted stay has concluded. This proof is an essential element for visa validation before the immigration authorities and must be included as a mandatory part of the documentation folder at the time of the consular interview.
