Extension regulations according to your nationality

The possibility of prolonging your stay in French territory varies drastically depending on the passport you use to submit your official application to the France-Visas authorities.

If you apply from countries like Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay (plus Australia, Brazil, South Korea, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, and Taiwan), the extension is not permitted. The visa is granted for a maximum, closed, and non-extendable period of exactly 12 months.

The only exception falls on citizens of Canada. Through an exclusive mobility treaty, they are authorized to process an additional 12-month extension by managing a Provisional Residence Authorization (APS) directly in France.

The temporal regulatory framework and leaving the country

The general regulatory framework of the Working Holiday Programme dictates that this immigration status is strictly temporary. For the vast majority, once the 365 days of validity are exhausted, it is mandatory to leave European territory.

Likewise, the French State prohibits making a change of immigration status (for example, transitioning to a salaried worker or student visa) without first returning to your home country.

Complying with these protocols will ensure a smooth transition if you wish to obtain temporary residence, enter the labor market permanently, or study in the region in the future.

⚠️ Key Requirement: The return ticket

It is a transversal and mandatory requirement to evidence in your file the possession of a return flight ticket to leave the territory once the visa ends.

As an alternative, you must present financial documentation that reliably proves you possess the exclusive additional funds intended for the future purchase of that ticket.
