The Norway Working Holiday Visa represents one of the most sought-after opportunities for young people who wish to experience life, culture, and the work environment in Scandinavia. This permit allows residing in the country for a maximum of 12 months, offering the possibility of working temporarily to cover travel expenses and studying for a limited period. Below, we detail the operation of the quota system, the application process, and the main requirements to access this visa.

Quota System

Unlike other destinations, the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) does not impose numerical limits (quotas) for eligible nationalities. It is an unlimited quota system, with an application process that remains open continuously throughout the year.

Applications are processed as they are received, without a specific opening day that crashes the system. This uninterrupted modality gives applicants the advantage of being able to plan their trip and gather documentation at their own pace, without the pressure of competing for a spot on a specific date.

Application Process

The application process is mixed, combining a digital phase with a mandatory in-person instance. Currently, Norwegian authorities require the application to be initiated and submitted in the applicant's country of residence or origin, not allowing applications from abroad or while being a tourist in the Schengen area.

The procedure is divided into the following fundamental stages:

  1. Online registration and payment: The first step consists of the formal registration of the application and the payment of the corresponding fee, both processes carried out entirely through the official web portal of the UDI.

  2. Physical presentation and biometrics: Once the online phase is completed, it is essential to attend a mandatory in-person appointment at the authorized visa application center (VFS Global) or at the corresponding Embassy for your jurisdiction. During this instance, the applicant's biometrics are captured, and all physical supporting documents are formally submitted in original and copy.

Main Requirements

For the application to be successful, candidates must meet a series of eligibility criteria and present documentary evidence. The primary requirements include:

  • Age range: It is strictly required to be between 18 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the time of registering the application.

  • Passport: Have a valid passport that covers the entire duration of the intended stay in Norway.

  • Financial Funds: Demonstrate having sufficient funds for maintenance during the first three months in the country. The minimum required amount is usually around 41,370 Norwegian kroner, demonstrable through bank statements.

  • Travel Insurance: Present a medical and accident insurance policy that has comprehensive coverage during the 12 months of stay.

  • The flight ticket: It is a mandatory requirement to have a round-trip ticket for the journey. In case of not having the return flight at the time of application, it must be demonstrated that there are sufficient additional financial funds to purchase the exit ticket from Norway at the end of the visa.

  • Accommodation: Provide an initial accommodation reservation, a rental contract, or a formal invitation letter from a resident in Norway.

Strictly complying with the documentary requirements and the in-person instances are the definitive steps to ensure a successful application and begin the Working Holiday experience in Norway.
