Study Guide and Requirements for the Taiwan Working Holiday Visa

Written by Volare | June 4, 2026

When planning your trip to the Asian continent, it is fundamental to understand what education requirements apply to your file and what the legal limits are if you wish to train at the destination. Below, we detail the academic and linguistic regulations to apply for this exchange program.

Official language exam requirement

Applies to all eligible nationalities (Germany, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, South Korea, Slovakia, France, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Netherlands, Poland, United Kingdom, and the Czech Republic): Not mandatory. No certification or official language exam is required for visa approval.

On a technical level, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) and the Bureau of Consular Affairs (BOCA) of Taiwan manage the selection criteria for the youth mobility program based on the precise stipulations of each bilateral reciprocity treaty.

The current regulatory framework does not establish the obligation to present an official language exam (such as the TOCFL for Mandarin or English accreditations) as an eligibility requirement to enter the application. As a practical recommendation, despite not being a binding requirement, possessing fundamental notions of the local language or a functional level of English will significantly facilitate the processes of daily adaptation and job search. Complying with the protocols of this organizational planning will ensure a smooth transition towards obtaining temporary residence, allowing you to materialize your insertion into the dynamic seasonal labor market.

Minimum academic level required

Applies to all eligible nationalities: Not mandatory. A minimum academic level or specific degree is not required for visa approval.

On a technical level, immigration authorities do not establish the obligation to present a university degree, secondary education diploma, or certificate of ongoing studies as an exclusionary requirement to enter the application. Although it is not a binding requirement, attaching your curriculum vitae and having your academic records organized will be fundamental not for the approval of the immigration document itself, but at the time of seeking employment at the destination.

Study modality allowed by nationality

On a technical level, because the main purpose of this visa is oriented towards tourism and seasonal employment, study activities are strictly limited to formative training programs or complementary language courses. The rules vary according to your citizenship:

  • Germany, Austria, Belgium, Canada, South Korea, Slovakia, France, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Netherlands, Poland, and the Czech Republic: Yes, it is allowed. Training courses or language studies are authorized for a maximum period of 6 months (180 days).

  • Australia: Yes, it is allowed, but with restrictions. Only Mandarin courses are authorized for a maximum period of 3 months (90 days).

  • Japan and the United Kingdom: Yes, it is allowed with total flexibility. Language, culture, or complementary study courses are enabled during the entirety of the visa, that is, up to a maximum of 12 months (1 year).

In all scenarios and without exceptions, formal enrollment in undergraduate, graduate university degrees, or extensive full-time academic programs that require the sponsorship of a regular student permit is completely prohibited. Respecting these guidelines will allow you to legally plan your participation in the diverse short-term academic offer of the region.

As a reminder to consolidate the solidity of your file, it is a mandatory transversal requirement to evidence the possession of a flight ticket to leave the territory, or else, to present the financial documentation that irrefutably demonstrates the possession of exclusive additional funds for its future purchase.
