🇦🇺 Study Guide for the Australian Working Holiday Visa

Updated: 4 days ago

Volare Editorial | August 25, 2026

Applying for the Australian Working Holiday Visa requires passing different filters depending on your country of origin. If your passport belongs to Subclass 417 (like Italy, France, or Canada), the government will not ask for language tests or diplomas. However, if you apply under Subclass 462 (which groups Spain and all of Latin America), you must demonstrate a "functional" level of English and a specific academic background.

Below, we break down exactly which exams are useful, what education level your passport demands, and how you can take advantage of this visa to train yourself once you land in Oceania.

Summary Board English Level and Accepted Exams

For Subclass 462, the Department of Home Affairs requires demonstrating a functional level of English. This requirement is mandatory, and the certificate must not be older than 12 months at the time of application.

Here is the exact matrix of recognized exams and the minimum overall score required:

Official Exam

Minimum Required Score

Volare Key Observation

🗣️ IELTS (General or Academic)

4.5 (Overall Band)

It is the most traditional exam. Both the paper and computer formats are accepted.

đź’» PTE Academic

30 (Overall Score)

Our favorite. Its results are usually delivered in less than 48 hours.

📝 TOEFL iBT

32 (Total Score)

Very popular in Latin America, focused on an academic environment.

🎓 Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE)

147 (Overall Score)

Accepted, although it usually has a higher difficulty level than required.

Exemptions: If you are a citizen of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, or Ireland, you are exempt from taking the exam. Also exempt are those who can prove they have completed at least 5 years of secondary or higher education entirely in English.

Summary Board Academic Requirements by Nationality

In addition to the language, Subclass 462 requires demonstrating that you possess a higher level of education. This point often generates a lot of confusion, so here we cross-reference the official immigration regulations according to your passport:

Passport (Nationality)

Minimum Education Requirement to Apply

🇦🇷 Argentina and 🇪🇸 Spain

Have successfully completed at least 2 years of university studies, OR possess a completed tertiary/university degree.

🇨🇱 Chile

Possess a completed university or professional training (tertiary) degree, OR have completed 2 years of university studies.

🇵🇪 Peru and 🇺🇾 Uruguay

Have successfully completed at least 2 years of university studies, OR possess a completed tertiary/university degree.

🇪🇨 Ecuador

Have successfully completed at least 2 years of university studies, OR possess a completed tertiary/university degree.

🇪🇺 European Passports (Sub 417)

❌ Not required. Nationalities like Italy or Germany do not have to prove previous studies.

Documentation: To prove this, a screenshot of the student portal is not enough. You must request an Official Academic Transcript from your educational institution (stamped or with digital validation) that clearly indicates you have passed the equivalent of two years of the curriculum, and attach it translated into English in your ImmiAccount.

Studying in Australia with the Working Holiday Visa

Once your visa is approved and you travel to Australia, the doors of the educational system open for you. Although the Working Holiday Visa is designed primarily for tourism and work, the Australian government grants you legal permission to study.

The 4 months (17 weeks) Rule Under both Subclass 417 and 462, you are allowed to study in Australian institutions for a maximum of 4 months (17 weeks).

What options can you take during this time?

  1. English Courses (ELICOS): Many travelers use their first 10 or 12 weeks in the country to do an intensive language immersion, improving their fluency before going out to look for professional jobs.

  2. Short Certifications (VET): You can take quick vocational courses (such as Barista, RSA to serve alcohol, or White Card for construction), which last from a day to a few weeks and are vital for your immediate labor insertion.

  3. Tech Bootcamps: Intensive training in areas like programming or UX/UI design.

If your main long-term goal is to complete a full degree or a Master's (which last several years), you will eventually need to apply for a Student Visa (Subclass 500), as the Working Holiday Visa has a strict time limit that cannot be exceeded.
