Study Guide for the Mexico Working Holiday Visa

Updated: Apr 1

The youth mobility program in Mexico allows participants to complement their stay with educational activities. According to the guidelines of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) and the National Institute of Migration (INM), studying is considered an incidental activity, secondary to the main purpose of vacationing and temporary employment.

Language requirements and educational accreditation

One of the most frequently asked questions is the need to certify knowledge of the local language. After auditing international treaties, it is confirmed that Mexico does not require the submission of official exams (such as DELE or SIELE) to grant the visa. For citizens of Chile, Colombia, and Peru, the evaluation is dismissed as they share the official language. In the cases of Canada, France, and New Zealand, although it is not a legal requirement for the visa, having Spanish language skills is recommended to facilitate job placement in the country.

Regarding the minimum educational level to apply, there are marked differences depending on the agreement:

  • Canada: This is the only country with a strict educational requirement. The applicant must prove they are a student enrolled in a post-secondary education institution in Canada to access the vacation and work modality without a prior job offer.

  • France, New Zealand, and Pacific Alliance (Chile, Colombia, Peru): No specific level of schooling, current enrollment, or university degree is required for Mexico to authorize the permit.

Scope of permitted studies and restrictions

Participants can take language courses, cultural workshops, or short-term technical diplomas. However, immigration legislation imposes clear limits depending on nationality and the type of program:

  • Restriction for New Zealand: Official regulations limit New Zealand citizens to participating in only one training or study course with a maximum duration of 3 months during their entire one-year stay.

  • General Rule: For other nationalities, studies can extend throughout the duration of the visa, provided they do not interfere with the holiday objective.

  • Prohibition of Degree Programs: The Working Holiday visa does not allow enrollment in bachelor's, master's, or doctoral programs exceeding 180 days. For these purposes, the interested party must process a Temporary Resident Student Visa.
