Study Guide for the Italy Working Holiday Visa

Updated: Apr 10

Volare Editorial | April 3, 2026

The Working Holiday in Italy program allows participants to combine their holiday and work stay with periods of academic training. It is essential to know the limits of these studies so as not to invalidate the conditions of the residence permit. For detailed assistance, you can visit Volare's Italy Working holiday section.

Language requirements and linguistic competence

For the participating nationalities (Australia, Canada, South Korea, Hong Kong, Japan, and New Zealand), the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs establishes the following criteria:

  • Language exam: It is not mandatory to present an official certificate of Italian proficiency (such as CILS or CELI) for visa approval.

  • Operational knowledge: Although a degree is not required, it is considered indispensable to have operational knowledge of Italian or, at least, English. This competence is necessary for administrative procedures, dealings with immigration authorities (IND), or the job search within the territory.

Educational level and academic background

Unlike other residency categories, the Working Holiday Visa for Italy does not require a minimum educational level to apply. It is not necessary to be a university student, hold a degree, or prove specific academic backgrounds. Eligibility focuses primarily on the applicant's age and compliance with nationality and solvency requirements.

Scope and duration of permitted studies

Participants can carry out educational activities as long as these do not constitute the primary purpose of their stay. Current regulations stipulate:

  1. Short-term courses: Taking technical programs, cultural workshops, or language classes is permitted for a maximum period of 6 months.

  2. Prohibition of degree programs: It is strictly forbidden to pursue full-time university undergraduate or postgraduate degrees under this visa. If the foreigner's primary interest is formal higher education, they must process a specific residence permit for students.
