Study Guide for the Working Holiday Visa of Uruguay

Updated: May 17

Volare Editorial | May 14, 2026

Uruguay's international mobility program not only promotes labor insertion and tourism but also offers a flexible framework for short-term academic development. Although the primary goal is cultural exchange, there are specific regulations regarding previous educational levels and the training activities permitted during the stay. Below, we detail the current conditions according to bilateral agreements.

Language requirements and linguistic competencies

Uruguay stands out for an open-door policy regarding communication. For the approval of residency under the Working Holiday program, no prior knowledge of the Spanish language is required.

  • United Kingdom, Portugal, and Ireland: The most recent memorandums of understanding, including the 2024 Youth Mobility agreement with the UK, explicitly state that no minimum language levels or prior work skills are required.

  • Germany, Australia, France, Japan, New Zealand, the Netherlands, and Sweden: For this block, the National Directorate of Migration maintains a criterion of total flexibility. Unlike other destinations, foreign citizens do not need to take official exams such as the DELE.

However, it is important to note that Spanish proficiency represents the most decisive asset for insertion into the local labor market, especially in the service, technology, and hospitality sectors.

Educational level required by nationality

Academic requirements vary significantly depending on the principle of reciprocity applied to each country of origin:

  1. Australia: This is the only case with strict requirements. Due to the reciprocal nature of the Subclass 462 visa, applicants must prove they have completed a tertiary degree or have fully completed the first two years of an undergraduate university degree. This documentation must be presented duly apostilled to the consular authorities.

  2. Rest of the countries: For Germany, France, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and Sweden, the Uruguayan state does not establish prior academic training requirements. It is sufficient to meet the age, health, and criminal record criteria to access the program.

Study possibilities and restrictions during the stay

The Working Holiday visa allows for academic activities, but under defined time limits to maintain the nature of the permit:

  • Australian citizens: They may undertake training courses, seminars, or language studies for a maximum period of four months.

  • Other nationalities: The general regulatory framework allows for a more extensive educational insertion, authorizing courses of up to six months in total duration.

Universal Restriction: Under this immigration category, enrollment in degree programs (Bachelor's, Engineering) or long-term postgraduate studies at the University of the Republic or private institutions is strictly prohibited. To pursue long-term studies, the interested party must apply for a specific Student Residency.
