Travel Insurance for the Portugal Working Holiday Visa

Securing comprehensive travel assistance is an essential requirement for obtaining the Temporary Stay Visa. This technical demand ensures that every participant in the mobility program has the necessary financial and logistical support to face medical eventualities without compromising their personal budget or the resources of the Portuguese public healthcare system.

Scope and Mandatory Coverage

For citizens of Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, South Korea, the United States, Japan, New Zealand, Peru, and Uruguay, the regulations stipulate a protection standard aligned with the rules of the Schengen Area.

According to the guidelines from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the insurance must strictly comply with the following parameters:

  • Minimum Medical Coverage: The policy must guarantee a minimum amount of 30,000 euros for emergency care, hospitalization, and medical treatments due to illness or accident.

  • Repatriation Service: It is imperative that the insurance includes medical and funerary repatriation to the holder's country of origin in case of extreme necessity or death.

  • Temporal Validity: The document must be issued for the total duration of the authorized stay, which generally corresponds to a period of 12 months from the estimated date of entry.

  • Territorial Validity: The certificate must specify that the coverage is valid throughout the territory of Portugal and, preferably, in all member states of the Schengen Area.

Insurance Permanence and Local Health

Unlike other categories of residence visas, Working Holiday Visa holders are not required to transition to local medical insurance or mandatorily register with the National Health Service (SNS) upon arrival. The international travel assistance presented during the application is considered the primary and sufficient backup for the entire stay, allowing the young traveler to access private medicine or coordinate direct assistance with their provider.

File Submission and Complementary Requirements

Proof of this insurance must be uploaded in digital format through the E-Visa Portal or the VFS Global system as part of the initial file. During the in-person appointment, the coverage certificate or "voucher" clearly showing the amounts and validity must be presented.

It is fundamental to remember that final approval is subject to the consistency of all documentation. Along with the insurance, the applicant must definitively include the accreditation of their return ticket or the financial means to purchase it, ensuring a safe return. Furthermore, it should be noted that this insurance covers accessory activities permitted by the visa, such as participation in the local academic offer in short-term training courses.
