Purchasing an international medical insurance policy is a mandatory and non-negotiable requirement to obtain the Brazil Working Holiday Visa. Under the VITEM VI immigration category, the Brazilian State requires applicants to have comprehensive protection covering any medical eventuality from the first day of arrival until the end of the permitted stay. Below, we detail the technical specifications your insurance must meet to be accepted by the consular authorities.

Minimum Coverage and Mandatory Clauses
Unlike conventional tourist visas, insurance for the Working Holiday must meet high-complexity medical assistance standards. According to the guidelines of the Consular Portal of Brazil, the policy must explicitly include:
Coverage Amount: A minimum coverage of USD 30,000 or EUR 30,000 (depending on the reference currency of the issuing consulate) is required for medical and hospital assistance.
Sanitary Repatriation: Coverage for the transfer of the patient in a medical plane or specialized transport in the event of an accident or serious illness that prevents return by conventional means.
Funerary Repatriation: Coverage for the expenses and procedures for the transfer of remains in the event of the holder's death.
It is essential that these concepts appear verbatim in the coverage certificate presented to the consulate, preferably written in Spanish, Portuguese, or English.
The Principle of Uninterrupted Validity
One of the most common errors in the application is presenting insurance with fragmented validity. For the VITEM VI visa, the technical rule is strict:
Total Duration: The policy must have an uninterrupted validity of 365 days (12 months). Insurance for shorter periods with promises of future renewal is not accepted.
Start of Coverage: The insurance must take effect on the projected day of entry into Brazilian territory. If the travel date changes after the visa is issued, it is the traveler's responsibility to adjust the policy dates to ensure continuous protection.
Validity Before Consular Authorities
At the time of the interview or digital upload into the E-Consular system, the officer will verify that the policy does not have exclusions that invalidate its purpose (such as exclusions for high-risk sports if the program includes adventure tourism activities). It is recommended to present the detailed benefits certificate and not just the assistance card.
