The Japanese government, through the regulations of its Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), establishes strict criteria regarding the permitted age to access the Working Holiday program, being an exclusionary factor at the time of submitting the application.

One of the first verifications that applicants interested in living the cultural and work exchange experience in Japan must perform is to confirm if they meet the age requirement. Although the spirit of the visa is focused on young people, there are precise rules on how and when this limit is calculated.
Below, the current official regulations for the different nationalities with bilateral agreements are detailed:
1. General Rule: 18 to 30 years old (inclusive)
Applies to the vast majority of Spanish-speaking and European countries, including: Argentina, Chile, Spain, Uruguay, United Kingdom, New Zealand, France, Germany, Portugal, Iceland, among others.
Exact limit: The applicant must be at least 18 years old and not have turned 31 years old at the exact moment the application is formally submitted to the Embassy or Consulate of Japan.
Technical note: If the candidate submits their documents being 30 years old and turns 31 days or weeks later, their application remains valid, since the age is frozen at the time the file is entered, not at the time of visa approval or travel.
2. Historical Exceptions: 18 to 25 years old (with extension to 30)
Applies to: Australia, Canada, South Korea, and Ireland (according to the base text of their respective agreements).
Condition: The foundational texts of these specific treaties set a limit of 18 to 25 years. However, the current operational guidelines of the Japan MOFA allow consular authorities to approve applications from citizens of these countries up to 30 years of age in the vast majority of practical cases, unifying the standard with the rest of the nations.
Additional administrative considerations
Regardless of the age range corresponding to the nationality, the Japanese government is inflexible with the following rule: beneficiaries of the Working Holiday Visa cannot travel accompanied by dependents (spouses or children), unless such dependents possess their own independent visa. Likewise, it should be remembered that there are restrictions on the academic offerings and the types of jobs allowed during the stay.
