One of the most frequent questions among young foreigners residing in Chile is whether there is a possibility to prolong their stay under the same Vacation and Work permit. The regulations of the National Migration Service (SERMIG) establish clear criteria that depend strictly on the bilateral agreement signed with each nation.

General rule and change of subcategory
For the vast majority of countries with an agreement, including Germany, Australia, Austria, Canada, Colombia, South Korea, Denmark, France, Hungary, Ireland, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, and Sweden, the Working Holiday permit has a maximum validity of 12 months. According to current treaties, this permit is non-extendable under the same modality.
However, Chilean legislation is flexible regarding the continuity of residency. If a young person wishes to stay longer in the country, they can apply for a "Change of Immigration Subcategory" before their original permit expires. This process is carried out entirely within Chile and allows a transition toward residency based on a work contract or other valid reasons, provided that the corresponding legal requirements are met.
Exception for citizens of Iceland
The bilateral agreement with Iceland is the only one that contemplates a direct extension exception. Icelandic citizens have the power to request an extension of their stay under the same Working Holiday visa for up to 12 additional months, completing a total period of two years. Like other nationalities, they also retain the right to request a change to another immigration subcategory if they so prefer.
The special case of Switzerland: Internship Agreement
It is essential to differentiate the program for Switzerland, which operates under an Internship Agreement and not as a traditional Working Holiday. In this case, the permit grants a maximum residency of 18 months. Being a program with specific professional training purposes, it does not allow extensions beyond that period under the same agreement, although it does allow for a change of immigration subcategory within the national territory for other purposes.
When planning a possible extension or change of status, travelers must consider that their entry into the country requires having credited the possession of a return flight ticket or, failing that, the necessary funds to purchase it. This financial backup is key to maintaining immigration regularity during any visa transition.
